The Zilina Region is situated in the northeast part of the Slovak Republic. It is the country of natural beauties, cultural relics, the country with advanced industries but also historically established agriculture, vast forests, big rivers and dams. The country in which folk traditions and architecture are meeting with modern construction, transportation, energetics and further achievements of technical progress. It is the country of Jánošík’s traditions, wooden churches, skansens and folk festivals, national revivalists, but also the country of important personalities of the cultural and social life and builders of dams, electric power stations, motorways, producers of television sets, engines, telephones, bearings, the country where the road communications, railways and air routes of Europe cross. Inhabitants of this country are still proud of the traditional attributes of the Slovaks - modesty, hospitality, but also the hard work that was since time immemorial the way of overcoming the hardships of climate and the lack of fertile land. Thanks to these properties and abilities, the people could adjust also to the new conditions of scientific-technical revolution and to the post-November development. Currently we evidence the many-sided development of Zilina Region ranking among the most developed in Slovakia.

The Zilina Region covers the area of 6,788 sq. km. It borders with Poland and the Czech Republic. The lowland basins of beds of the rivers Váh, Orava, Turiec, Kysuca are situated at the elevation of 300 m a.s.l. and are closed by hills and mountain ranges, among which the most important are the West Tatras, Low Tatras, Lesser Fatra and Greater Fatra, Beskyds, Strázovské vrchy (Strázov Hills) and Javorníky (Javorník Mountains). The highest peak is Bystrá 2,248 m a.s.l.

The Region has mild, warm to cold and humid climate with the lowest temperatures in Slovakia measured at Oravská Polhora. The forests stretch over the area of 362,185 ha (54% of the Region’s acreage), the farmland covers 250,880 ha (37%), out of which the arable land covers only 71,701 ha (28%).

It consists of 11 districts, 314 settlements out of which 17 were granted the town statute. At the end of 1996 the Region’s population was 687,771 which made 13% of the total population of Slovakia. In the Region live 98% of Slovaks, 1.17% of Czechs and 0.39% of Romany. The most populated is Zilina District and the least populated is Turcianske Teplice District. In towns live 51% of the total population, the largest of the towns is Zilina, the smallest is Rajecké Teplice.
